Jason Hatcher

That's me on the left. The handsome fellow on the right is my son, who has almost from infancy refused to smile for photographs. The only solution is to make him laugh. I mention this because this image is a testament to my sense of humor and my keen sense of timing. The photo is a few years old - he doesn’t look like that anymore. His hair is considerably longer, and it’s purple now, and he rocks. Like, literally, with a bass guitar and everything. I admire his music, though I never listen to it - we have very different tastes.

I was raised in the mountains. After 18 years in the Midwest I came home in spite of Thomas Wolfe’s warnings against the move, and I’ve set up on the unfashionable west side of a little place in western NC called Avery County, in an ancient gas station that has somehow had the fortitude to remain standing since around 1910. It’s a fixer-upper, a bit lopsided and with a few missing parts, but I like it there. It’s a work in progress - the building and I are learning each other’s secrets and so far it looks like we’re going to be friends. I make paintings and photographs and listen to the Big Horse Creek running along noisily behind the studio, and think about the unfortunate necessity of things like websites and social media and politicians.

If you’re visiting this site as a commercial client, I have a pretty simple philosophy regarding commercial photography, which is: nothing sells until it’s photographed. I’m always connecting the image to the dollar. It’s why you’re shooting, and we’re in a wonderfully capitalist country and there’s nothing wrong with that. You hire a photographer because you want to make money. I can help you do that. It’s that simple.

If you’re looking for art, hit up the Shop page - I keep a steadily growing inventory of paintings and photographs inspired by the mountains, the sea, and the sky, and random musings. Give me a call and let’s talk about it. If you’ve got wall space you’re dying to fill, I can help you out.

If you’re looking for advice, here it is: take the plunge. Do it. Whatever that thing is you want but are afraid to go and get - do that. Soon. Today, if possible.

I’m available for work and travel year-round, although skiing, random hiking trips, and any chance to work in the Florida Keys will be given priority.

Feel free to reach out anytime.

All the best,

J.
